Sclerotherapy in Huntington Beach, CA

Sclerotherapy in Huntington Beach, CA

Sclerotherapy is the standard treatment for spider veins — the fine red, blue and purple threads that appear on the legs. A sclerosing solution is injected directly into the unwanted vein, which irritates the lining of the blood vessel and causes it to collapse, clot, and eventually be reabsorbed by the surrounding tissue. Blood redirects to healthier veins and the treated ones fade from view.

The procedure is performed with a fine needle and small amounts of solution. It treats spider veins rather than large bulging varicose veins, which are managed by a vein specialist — if that is what you have, we will tell you at your consultation and point you in the right direction.

When will I see results from sclerotherapy?

The effectiveness of sclerotherapy can be seen within a few weeks of the initial treatment, with some patients occasionally reporting that it took up to a month to see visible results.

How many sclerotherapy treatments will I need?

The number of treatments you may need will depend on the extent of your spider veins as well as your desired appearance. Individual treatment plans vary and can be discussed with your doctor at your consultation. On average, patients receive three to four treatments to clear or improve the condition of those unwanted veins.

How do I prepare for my sclerotherapy appointment?

A few things make the appointment go better, and one of them has to be arranged in advance:

  • Bring full-leg compression stockings. You will need them straight after treatment, so buy them beforehand and bring them with you.
  • Avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen and fish oil in the days before, as they increase bruising. If you take a prescribed blood thinner, do not stop it — speak to the doctor who prescribed it first.
  • Do not apply moisturizer or lotion to your legs on the day of your appointment. The skin needs to be clean and dry.
  • Skip shaving for a few days beforehand if you can. Freshly shaved skin is more easily irritated.

What is the aftercare following sclerotherapy?

Compression is what holds the result, so the week afterward matters:

  • Wear your compression stockings during all waking hours for seven days. They can come off at night.
  • Walk for about 30 minutes a day. Movement keeps blood flowing through the healthy veins.

Expect the treated veins to look darker before they fade, and plan the week with that in mind.

What are the side effects of sclerotherapy?

The most common side effects to sclerotherapy include allergic reactions, ankle swelling, vein inflammation or phlebitis, and in rare cases, transient hyperpigmentation. More often than not, the injected veins will become darker before disappearing due to the irritant nature of the sclerosing solution.
