How does Botox work?

Botox® and similar products like Dysport® are injectables containing a neuromodulator called botulinum toxin. Neuromodulators act on specific nerves to affect or inhibit their function. Dysport and Botox injections cause targeted nerves to relax their corresponding muscles for months.

The Z-Dermatology & Skin Wellness Center team uses Dysport to treat fine lines on your face. The injectable inhibits motor nerve activity and the muscles that cause these wrinkles to relax. You can expect your Dysport results to last 3 months, and you can repeat the injections to extend your results. 

What does Botox treat?

Dysport — the Botox-like injection at Z-Dermatology & Skin Wellness Center — treats moderate to severe frown lines between your eyebrows. Frown lines are tiny vertical creases that appear between the eyebrows with age. Not everyone gets frown lines or feels troubled by them, but Dysport can treat them if you want smooth skin. 

Botox and Dysport treat frown lines because they belong to a class called dynamic wrinkles. Due to specific facial expressions, dynamic wrinkles appear in areas where your skin creases. At first, these creases only appear when you make those movements. Over time and with repeated expressions, they eventually stay in place, which is called static wrinkles.

Static wrinkles are not associated with facial movements or expressions and are not treatable with Botox or Dysport. For this reason, Dysport is used as a preventation of static wrinkles. When wrinkles are static, other procedures may be necessary in combination to help slowly improve those lines.

What should I expect during the Botox procedure?

Before your treatment, it is best to do the following:

Your injectable procedure at Z-Dermatology & Skin Wellness Center takes just 10-15 minutes. They use very fine needles to administer Dysport to ensure your comfort. 

• Avoid any blood-thinning medications/supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), fish oil, and vitamin E for 2 days 
• Avoid alcohol for 2 days before procedure

After treatment, you’ll have to follow a few simple instructions. We encourages you to:

• Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
• Avoid laying flat for 4 hours
• Report any unusual side effects like headaches or skin reactions
• Generally, you can continue your usual skincare routine after Dysport injections.
